PRESS RELEASE
Freetown, Sierra Leone, 22 February 207

Special Court Indictee Sam Hinga Norman Dies in Dakar

It is with deep regret that the Special Court for Sierra Leone announces the
death of former Sierra Leone Internal Affairs Minister Sam Hinga Norman, who was
on trial before the Special Court for Sierra Leone. Mr. Norman died today at a
military hospital in Dakar, Senegal.

Mr. Norman and another Special Court detainee were taken to Dakar on 17 January
for medical procedures which were considered routine, but which were unavailable
in Sierra Leone. Those procedures were performed on Thursday, 8 February,
without complication.

At 10:55 this morning Mr. Norman collapsed and, despite attempts to revive him,
was pronounced dead at about 11:15.

Initial indications are that Mr. Norman suffered heart failure during
post-operative care. Registrar Lovemore Munlo, SC has ordered an independent
investigation by international medical experts to determine the exact cause of
death.

Mr. Munlo informed family members early this afternoon and expressed his deep
personal regret at their loss.

Mr. Norman had been charged with 8 counts of war crimes and crimes against
humanity stemming from acts allegedly carried out by the Civil Defence Militia
he headed during Sierra Leone?s decade-long civil conflict. He had maintained
his innocence throughout the trial, which began in June 2004.

A verdict in the case is pending before the Trial Chamber..

#END

Nicky's Update from the Capital

Thursday, February 22, 2007

Since Information travels the word over, we are aware of the latest spate of shootings in the UK and it is a tragedy. I must say that as a person who lived in the US until 2001, I was a little surprised that they shootings caused such an uproar, only because maybe in the US shootings and the reporting of them are a much more "regular" occurence.

Here in Sierra Leone, in related news, a teenage boy (a student at Technical School) was stabbed to death at his school's Prize Giving Ceremony on Monday. The details are sketchy, but apparently another student, his girlfriend, invited another one of her suitors to the Ceremony. That suitor attended armed with a knife and got into a scuffle with the Technical student over the girl. A scuffle that ended with one boy's death and another's arrest. Sad.

Switching gears: Sierra Leone's first reality tv show is going from strength to strength! If I haven't mentioned it before, "So YOU Think You Can Dance, Sierra Leone" is its name (obviously you can see where the name came from!). It's produced by the new tv production wing of our company (SSTV Productions) and aired on SLBS TV (Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service).
Talented kids are competeing for the title of Best individual and Best Group Dancers in Sierra Leone. I host the program and it is a joy to see how week to week these ordinary kids are rising to the challenge. The public also gets the opportunity to vote for their favorite dancers through sms voting after the show is aired on SLBS. It's providing a great learning opportunity for everyone involved!

Family News: my husband is on a work-out regimen and just announced that he's going vegeterian for a month- leaving me with the dilemma of figuring out what the heck he's going to eat! (should just feed him salad greens! lol!). Daughters are doing well: the eldest announced today that "I am not your friend!" because I would not let her eat cheese balls before her lunch of jollof rice and chicken stew! Stay Well.

The Chancellor's Banquet - It's 180 years since...

The Chancellor’s Banquet to celebrate 180 years of Fourah Bay College (FBC) - University of Sierra Leone

On Friday, 16th February 2007, a Who’s Who from Sierra Leonean society gathered at the picturesque Kimbima Hotel in Aberdeen to celebrate 180 years of Fourah Bay College (FBC). To put this celebration in perspective, the world renowned Durham University was founded some four years after the FBC. The celebratory banquet was hosted by the Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone (USL), who is the incumbent President of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. The Chancellor happened to be celebratory mood because he was celebrating own personal birthday on the same day too. His new age remained undisclosed!

Guests were seated by 7pm in time for the arrival of our host. His arrival prompted the playing of the national anthems of The Gambia and Sierra Leone. Alhaji Dr. Yayah Jammeh, The President of The Gambia was expected at the banquet, but the celebrations here in Sierra Leone coincided with the celebration of independence by the Gambian people and His Excellency, Yayah Jammeh was in attendance on state duties. He sent his Emissary, Honourable Kebban Sanyang, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of the Republic of Gambia, who incidentally, is a graduate of the FBC and he was lectured by the Vice President of Sierra Leone, Solomon E D Berewah and also Francis Gabbidon, who were both present at the 180 years celebration. Alhaji Dr. A B Karim and Rev. Canon Emerson Thomas conducted the Muslim and Christian prayers respectively. Both prayed for the continued prosperity of the FBC. Promptly after, the banquet was called to order by the distinguished Masters of Ceromonies: Lawrence Spencer-Coker and Miatta French.

Statements made on that eventful evening revealed that Fourah Bay College (FBC) was founded on the 18th February 1827, by the Church Missionary Society, essentially for the training of teachers and missionaries to assist in the promotion of education and the spread of Christianity in British West Africa. In 1876 it became a degree granting institution with affiliation to the University of Durham, England, turning out her first crop of Durham degree graduates in 1879. Since then the FBC has maintained a reputable tradition of higher education in West Africa.

On the 21st of December, 1959, FBC was granted a Royal Charter by the Senate of the University of Durham to become; FOURAH BAY COLLEGE, The University of Sierra Leone. Upon the granting of the Royal Charter, a reputable newspaper at the time in England remarked that the next institution to be granted an affiliation to Durham would be the London Zoo. Even at the time, such a statement was considered racist. But FBC has endured more trauma during its long history.

Before its current location on Mount Aureol, overlooking Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, FBC was located at Cline Town, at the East End of Freetown. As a result of the 2nd World War, the campus was relocated to Mabang, in the Northern Province. The current campus at Mount Aureol was established in 1944. A hand-painted oil impression of the old FBC and the new FBC buildings were commissioned by the Chancellor’s Banquet Organising Committee and presented as parting gifts to the Gambian delegation and President Kabbah, respectively.

In 1967 following an Act of Parliament, FBC was transformed into a constituent college of the University of Sierra Leone, with Njala University College (NUC), which had been founded in 1964, as the other arm. In 1972, as a result of the Carney Commission’s Report, the system became unitary, and by the end of the 80s, the University had four constituent colleges, viz, FBC, NUC, the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) and the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM).

The 2005 Universities Act created two separate universities with Fourah Bay College and COMAHS and IPAM forming the University of Sierra Leone, while NUC, the Bo Paramedical School, the School of Hygiene, Kenema, formed the Njala University.

In his statement at the Chancellor’s Banquet, the Honourable Minister of Education, Science & Technology, Dr Alpha T. Wurie noted that since its inception in 1827 a total of 22,000 students had enrolled at the FBC. 40% of those students had been enrolled in the last five years, since 2002. He stressed that the country as a whole must do all it can to “Retain those we Train”, highlighting the blighting brain-drain problem faced by Sierra Leone.

Professor Gbakima, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone in his statement discussed the issues facing the University, noting that student numbers had grown over the last few years but the infrastructure and support systems had not grown in line to cope with the expansion. In this regard, he highlighted the fundraising aspect of the banquet, especially mentioning the Lattie Hyde rehabilitation project, which is estimated at four hundred million Leones.

Honourable Kebban Sanyang, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Gambia, also an FBC law graduate representing the Gambian President, heaped praise on the FBC for creating so many successful Gambian academics who were now making positive contributions to the Gambian society at home and in the Diaspora. Honourable Sanyang remarked that the Gambia had only recently structured its first state university and even more recently, its Law department within the university. He pledged his government’s support for the FBC, especially the current fundraising project and humbly asked for assistance in making the University of Gambia a success, just like the USL.

The Chancellor’s Banquet was formally opened by the Birthday Boy and Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, the distinguished President of Sierra Leone himself, with his Statement. He eloquently traced the history of the University from its humble beginnings to its rich affiliation with Durham, even though the FBC predates it, and he traced the several wars and conflicts that she (FBC) has had to survive over the years. The Celebratory Cake, appetizingly decorated in the colours of the Sierra Leonean flag – green, white and blue - was unveiled to the eager banquetters and it was lit by a stream of distinguished members of society who had supported and indeed, continue to support the work of the FBC.

Dignitaries who lit candles included; Solomon Ekumah Dominic Berewah – Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone; Alhaji Dr. Abdulai Kakay – MD of Sierra Leone Commercial Bank; Mr Aki Macauley – MD of Rokel Commercial Bank; Mr Edmond Koroma – Director-General of NASSIT; Mr Thomas Hull – US Ambassador to Sierra Leone; Mr Cheng Weng Ju – Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone; Mr Tunde Cole – MD of Sierra Leone National Petroleum Co. Ltd; Professor Victor E H Stasser-King – Pro-Chancellor of the USL; Mrs Junietta Macauley – MD of Colombia Davies Memorial Palour; Dr Kishore Shankerdas – MD of G Shankerdas & Son (SL) Ltd & Hon. Consul-General of Japan & Chairman of the University of Sierra Leone (USL) Development Fund; Dr John Karimu – Commissioner-General of the National Revenue Authority; Dr Julius Spencer – MD of Premier Media; Mr Ted Phiri – MD of Celtel (Sierra Leone) Ltd; Karen Akinwumi-Tanoh – MD of ECO Bank; Mr Kamal Nassar – MD of Sierra Construction Systems; Mrs Kona Koroma; Anthony Popoola – CEO/MD of Afritone Oil; Professor Vidal Godwin – the 1st graduate of Physics and Mathematics from FBC and Alhaji Kabany from Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA).

The candles were blown out by Justice Cornelius Harding a retired Supreme Court Judge who graduated from FBC over 50 years ago having enrolled on November 28th 1945; and Francesss Turay, currently the youngest student at Mount Aureol having enrolled at the tender age of seventeen.

In between performances by the Ballanta Music Academy and the Police Brass Band, the Loyal Toast was proposed by the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone; Professor V E H Strasser-King; the Toast to the Government and People of the Gambia was proposed by Professor Kosonike Koso-Thomas; and the Toast to Fourah Bay College was proposed by Mr Andre Hope, indigenous Sierra Leonean business moghul.

In closing, Adonis Aboud, Consul-General of Yugoslavia, Founder of Pikin Bizness and Managing Director of Transnational Ltd – owner of the DSTV franchise in Sierra Leone and a valued member of the Chancellor’s Banquet Organising Committee, proposed the Toast to the Guests before closing courtesies were performed by Mrs Bernadette Cole, Secretary of the Chancellor’s Banquet Committee. Other members in the Banquet Organising Committee were: Professor Aiah Gbakima (Chairman) is the Vice Chancellor and Principal, USL; Mr Edmund Koroma is the Director General, NASSIT; Mr Osho Coker is the Coordinator at the Governance Secretariat; Mrs Junietta Macauley is the Managing Director, Columbia Davies Funeral Palour; Mr Oliver Harding is a Librarian at FBC; Dr JD Rogers is the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone; Mr Wilfred Sam King is the Managing Director of Sam King Services; Dr Kishore Shankerdas, is the Chairman of the University Development Fund; Mr Andrew Keili is the Executive Director of CEMMATS; Mr Kenneth Osho is the Head of Department of Language Studies at FBC; Ms Sanira Deen is an Environmentalist from CEMMATS; Mrs Olive Barrie is the Head of Administration & Personnel at IPAM, USL.

US Embassy to Resume Processing Non-Immigrant Visas

In a press conference at the new Leicester location of the United States Embassy, the incumbent US Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Thomas Hull, announced the immediate resumption of non-immigrant visa services at the American Embassy in Freetown.

Pronouncing that “the time is now”, the Ambassador announced that his goal of visa services resumption when he came into the country two and a half years ago, has now been realised. The Ambassador pointed out that visa services in Freetown were suspended in 1997 due to the uncertain security situation, the evacuation of the Vice-Consul and other staffing issues. Security issues with the former Chancery included the vulnerability of its location and also risks associated with a location directly opposite a fully operational petrol station.

The Ambassador stated that the US takes security very seriously but with the move to the new building, those issues have been addressed. The press conference was also spear headed by the Public Relations Officer, Brenda Soya and Vice-Consul, Brendon Malarkey. Ms Soya stated that from the moment the Vice-Consul arrived in Sierra Leone in June 2006, it was just a “matter of time” before visa services would resume in Freetown. Responding to questions from the press, Ms Soya stated that the resumption of visa services was part of the Embassy’s plan, as stated at the beginning of 2007, and not directly attributable to the current crisis in Conakry, where visas were being temporarily issued.

According to Ambassador Hull, the Freetown office will only handle non-immigrant visas, at least until 2008. Immigrant visas will continue to be issued out of Dakar and Diversity applications out of Abidjan.

Ambassador Hull cautioned that the Vice-Consul is the only figure responsible for visa decisions. Regardless of circumstances, all applicants must apply online using the official Sierra Leone Web Portal at: www.freetown.usembassy.gov where the necessary steps are fully explained.

The Ambassador further cautioned that the non-immigrant visa process is not a ‘lottery’ and applicants should not ‘gamble’ on a visa. He stressed that the United States welcomes all ‘qualified’ applicants but is also committed to “maintaining the security and integrity of its borders and nation.”

It is expected that this news will resonate positively with the people of Sierra Leone who no longer need to make the sometimes arduous trip to Guinea to apply for US non-immigrant visas in a French speaking country. Hooray!

Celtel Premier Music Awards 2003 - 2006

Celtel Premier Music Awards Information

2003; 2004; 2005; 2006 event held on Friday, December 15th 2006 at the National Stadium Main-Bowl. 2Face from Nigeria was the special guest. His appearance in Sierra Leone did not have the same impact as P Square earlier in the year, but he graced the occasion well. The bulk of the PA System, Stage and Lights used by the organisers, Premier Media, came in from the Ivory Coast. Music Makers of Sierra Leone supplemented the imported PA System.

Since 2003 all the way through to 2005, Premier Media have always organised the Celtel Premier Music Awards event in collaboration with the Cassette Sellers Association (CSA). However, starting in 2006, Premier Media will organise the CPMAs without the collaboration of the CSA. The CSA organised their own music awards show with sponsorship from Comium. Award season sees several award shows including, The People's Choice Awards, The Promoters Club Awards, The TBS Awards and the grandest of them all, the Grand Awards, which were held in London in 2006. It is expected that the 2007 Grand Awards will be held in London also. Nigeria is a possible location for the Grand Awards 2008. Online nominations and voting for the 2007 Grand Awards will be officially administered on Voote.com. Thanks Ravind!

The CPMAs are considered amongst the most prestigious and coveted music awards for Sierra Leonean musicians. The event was held on Friday, 16th December 2005 at the National Stadium in Freetown.

Emmerson received 4 PMA 2005 Nominations and won 3 Awards

Khady Black received 3 PMA 2005 Nominations and won 1 Award

Vee received 1 PMA 2005 Nomination and won 1 Award - Best Female Vocalist

Father Thug received 1 PMA 2005 Nomination and won 1 Award

Star Zero received 1 PMA 2005 Nomination

Winners of the 2005 PMAs were announced at a concert on Friday, 16th of December 2005. The 2005 event venue was the National Stadium's Main-bowl, Freetown, Sierra Leone with a capacity of about 32,000.

Celtel Premier Music Awards (CPMAs), sponsored by Celtel, are amongst the most coveted music awards in the Sierra Leone music scene. Up until 2005, the CPMA was organised by Sierra Leone's top media company Premier Media, in collaboration with the Cassette Sellers Association (CSA) who are the leading distributors of music within Sierra Leone. The 2006 event will be a Premier Media event. Since its inception in 2003, winners of CPMAs have reflected the best music that's come out of Sierra Leone in the previous twelve months.

In 2005, each winner received prize money of four million leones and a beautiful trophy pma 2004 trophy made in England. It was the biggest event to date with a professional PA system and stage set brought in from Ivory Coast. An after-party was held at the beach to showcase the winners. In addition to the Celtel Premier Music Awards, the Sierra Leone Grand Music Awards will be held in London in 2006 to celebrate Sierra Leonean music and Sierra Leone's musicians. It promises to be a great event, not just for Sierra Leonean musicians but for Sierra Leoneans everywhere! More information can be found at the official Grand Awards website. 2Face is reported to be costing over $25,000 USD to come and perform at the 2006 CPMA. The PA System, Stage and Lights are coming in from the Ivory Coast at a reported $15,000 USD. If wishes were money everyone would be a millionaire. If I had that cash to spend on one awards show, I would do things differently. I would want to spend a lot more of it on making things better in Sierra Leone, not taking it out of Sierra Leone. I wonder what it would have been like to... To read more about my commentary on how I would have spent the cash, log on to the Supreme Inc Blog for the latest.

Borbor Bele 2005 World Tour

In September 2005, Supreme Inc left the shores of Sierra Leone directly for London. We had just finished tours in Guinea and The Gambia. The party that left for London included, Emmerson and V - of Borbor Bele fame - and Khady Black - of Mr Government fame - and their manager, Lawrence Spencer-Coker, who is also the President of Supreme Inc. This was the first time a tour of this magnitude had been embarked on by Sierra Leonean artistes. No funding from outside sources, and no backing from outside sources. The burning question on everyone's lips were: Will they get their US visas? Will they make it to the US? Will the artists return back to Sierra Leone?

Read on to find what happened, the awards and who made it back and how Supreme Music changed the Sierra Leonean music scene forever. This is just a taste of things to come as Supreme Music continues to pioneer.

AT ZANZIBAR, EMMERSON, V AND KHADY BLACK IN CONCERT

WASHINGTON, D.C., OCTOBER 8, 2005 - Emmerson, Vlicious - the only female voice on the critically acclaimed Borbor Bele album, and Khady Black, the latest and the hottest of Sierra Leone’s musical artistes made their debut at the Zanzibar Club last night amidst clamourous applause and yearning. The Zanzibar, is located in the precincts of the plush waterfront of fine restaurants dotting the sea food market on Main Street abutting the lap of the Potomac River in South West Washington, D.C. The Zanzibar, is adjacent the opulent H2O club

The day preceding the concert was rainy. In the course of the night, the rain came down in sheets and forebode a wet concert evening. But Saturday evening was dry to the delight of the patrons and fans anticipated grey skies but a pleasant dry evening of Emmerson and Company. As the skies withheld the rain, there poured into the waterfront eager crowds of patrons and fans. Approaching the club from the summit of L’enfant Plaza, overlooking the swollen Potomac River bouyed by the heavy rains, a dim note of the warmup music of the concert could be heard.

A line bearing late patrons purchasing tickets closed the entrance. In the hallway were milling fans engaged in small talk and enjoying drinks. Inside the cavernous concert hall of the Zanzibar, a thousand patrons occupied the standing room enjoying the warmup performance featuring Salone Ismael and Victoria Fornah (Vicky) accompanied by a local band. Draped in Rasta colors, Salone Ishmael in his signature dread locks adorned the stage as Vick Fornah, clad in a white stage outfit regaled the audience with her songs. And when she sang the most popular of those songs, the audience joined her in chorus singing “dis wol”. Her performance was captivating. But the hour the patrons paid $30.00 for was reaching its summit when Khady Black was announced in concert.

Khady Black sprung on the stage to great audience excitement. She had it going on. She wore her hair in dread locks festooned with seemed like silver ringlets. The petite and elegant rising reggae artist performed crowd favorites from her debut album: “Cosmetic Girls,” “Repatriation,,” “Some Love.”Corruption,” and capped her performance with her hit songs, “Mr. Government” and "Faire". With “Mr. Government,” Khady Black stirred the souls of her compatriots of her postwar country, asking her rulers for medicine, food, shelter among the elusive necessities often within reach, only to the opulent class. Prancing on the stage in feline agility, she was in her elements in classic Rasta fashion as the audience cheered her. Khady Black indeed won her place among talented singers and performers in the firmament of rising musical artists.

The Zanzibar debut of Emmerson, Vee and Khady Black was approaching the climax when Emmerson was announced on his way to the stage. The well of the hall swelled in anticipation. Young women and fans of Emmerson, drew near as he climbed the stage amidst clamorous applause and huzzas. Emmerson, slight of frame, coffee black, with small piercing eyes, a graceful smile, his charming countenance, started to perform “Sugar meresin,” and the crowd beckoned. He performed “gi am bench,” and the crowd’s mood swung and yearned for more. Then junkie boy,” and he endeared them..

It was when Emmerson performed and sang “Elizabeth” with his boon consort, Velma Richards, that a clamourous bevvy of patrons swooned over him. The male patrons drooped over Velma as she charmed them with gyrations in tight fitting jeans. The heaving, sometimes sonorous voice of Emmerson in harmony with Vee’s sultry and enchanting voice, her bewitching performance as the wicked ‘Elizabeth,’ her well-turned feet in dance performance, graced the stage. The pair of artists performed the popular song, “Elizabeth,” in a heart-breaking lament of unrequited love in which Emmerson agonizes over a lover who spurn him after he forsook a former lover who bought him a Benz. She in turn proclaims her fashion of cupboard love and despairs of empty pocket men. Emmerson and Vee were at their best in the bewail of this pooch pooch romance.

The best of the concert was yet to come with the performance of “Uman lapa,” when Emmerson and Vee conjoined in a wonderful medley giving vent to Vee’s sensuous voice, her winsome stage gestures. Vee’s cooing and Emmerson’s lustful entreating, were command performances. The boon pair gave an encore in “Tutu pati,” the most popular of the Emmerson songs. Yearning fans pined for him as he threw off his loose black shirt and remained clad in a white singlet. His lanky frame bounced to the delight of the fans as they yearned to touch him. He dared them when he stepped down into the well of the concert hall and the fans swarmed the star. The club bouncer rescued Emmerson and returned him to safely onto the stage.

Then, it was on to the performance of “Swegbeh,” and Borbor Bele which too drew applause and pleasant appreciation of the pair’s outstanding performance. Emmerson, a recent graduate of Njala University with the National Diploma in Computer Technology and Velma Richards, a First-Year Medical student at the College of Medicine and Allied Sciences in Sierra Leone, are uncommon talented artists with professional interests. The concert ended on a high note with audience satisfaction for wonderful performances. The artists autographed their albums and cards. They repaired backstage for a small award ceremony in which the writer Karamoh Kabba, President & CEO of the Sierra Leone Youth Lending Hands, a community based non-profit organization joined him in recognizing the artists. Emmerson received a Plaque and certificate for demonstrating outstanding musical talent and Velma Richards and Khadija Fofanah received Certificates of Distinction for the same.

If Khadija Fofanah, Emmerson and V gave an excellent concert performance, it is because they are fine artist to behold. If their stars are rising in the Sierra Leonean pantheon of music, it is because their compatriots and their fans appreciate good music laced with political commentary. With such an auspicious commanding debut performance in the United States, the news is spreading to other states that Emmerson, V and Khady Black will entertain more fans in the approaching days in a concert near you

Above all, if these young artists have wrought fine performances, Lawrence Spencer-Coker (Omolare), their Manager has done a great job with his ShowBiz company, Supreme Inc in Sierra Leone and is critical to making the tour happen. It was his foresight that has taken this show on the road to London and now to the USA. In distinguished performance as promoter is Mohamed Kosia, manager of Cool and Cozie Promotions in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Lawrence made him the exclusive US Promoter of the Supreme Inc Borbor Bele USA Tour. Together with encouraging assistance from good collaborators, the show will break out in other cities with similar successes.

The Last USA Show of 2005

The final chance to see Emmerson and Vee during the 2005 USA Tour was SUNDAY, 27TH NOVEMBER 2005. The show was a family daytime show specially for kids. It amazed us to find out that kids born and bred in America - and couldn't speak Krio, the main local language in Sierra Leone - could sing the words to Emmerson's songs, most of which are in Krio. This show was dedicated to the kids and we made sure they had a great time. Event details include:

TIME: 4PM TO 10PM

$10 FOR KIDS TICKETS

$15 ADULT TICKETS

VENUE: BEST WESTERN HOTEL (CAPITAL BELTWAY)

5910 PRINCESS GARDEN PARKWAY

LANHAM - MARYLAND - 20706

The show was promoted by C&C Promotions.

Now, back to the beginning...

Emmerson, V and Khady Black's first ever USA performance took place at Zanzibar on the Waterfront in Washington DC. The show was packed to the rafters and a trailer of the DVD can be seen

here. The show at Zanzibar also featured other Sierra Leonean artists including; Vicky Fornah, Salone Ishmael, who got really close to the screaming audience and JR the Sniper! who was an inspiration during the USA tour. Thanks JR! It all kicked off on...

Saturday October 8th 2005 at Zanzibar in Washington DC

with a LIVE BAND performance featuring: Emmerson, Khady Black, Vlicious, Vicky Fornah and Kassa Afrika Band, a band led by the Sierra Leonean artist Attillah the Dangerous! Kassa Africa means 'Voices of Africa and Attilah's band can be reached by calling Attillah direct in the USA on 001 703 981 8509.

A review of the Emmerson, Vee and Khady Black performance at Zanzibar

by Amadu Massally a.k.a. Jepson

If you don't know who Attilla is then you don't know about Sierra Leonean music. Attilla is one of the most talented musicians to have come out of ' Salone '. His keyboard skills are lengendary! He fronts the Afrika Kassa Band and they have a regular spot at both Zanzibar and Boukum Cafe, both in Washington DC. Attilla and Afrika Kassa opened the show and it was amazing. After Attilla's opening at Zanzibar, I had the opportunity to listen to Khady Black, Vee and Emmerson LIVE for the very first time and the show was captivating. Vee started by singing the national anthem. Anyone there would admit that she has the most amazing voice on the planet at the mo. Beyonce has absolutely nothing on her.

With the right management - which I am sure she has under SupremeInc - she and Khady the 'roots woman' will climb to even higher heights. After the intro, Khady Black kicked off the SupremeInc. show... and what a show it was. Vee joined her on stage and they did a few songs together. This is the first time Sierra Leonean artists have been taken all the way from Sierra Leone to do a UK/US tour taking in several states. We must commend Cool & Cozie Promotions in the US for promoting the show and also SupremeInc for making it happen. Anyway, back to the show.

Then came the big man himself, or should I say tall, slim and handsome man. Emmerson, entertained the crowd with his vibrant style and I liked the fact that he gave a short story to every song, so as to give a perspective with regards to his line of thinking as the songs were developed.

Overall it was well-attended in spite of the fact that it is the month of Ramadan, and so forth.

The man behind the vision, Mr. Lawrence Spencer-Coker - a guy I spoke to at length - has a plan which is speedily unfolding and we expect to take our Sierra Leonean musicians globally. There is enough raw talent out there that can be honed and promoted to the next level... And personally I believe they are on the right track with SupremebInc.

Sierra Leoneans showed a sense of nationalism, whether we realized it or not last night and with people like myself embracing the inspiration provided through the forum of music and lyrics and "preaching the gospel" we can make a difference.

So all who may have the opportunity to view this message remember the ONUS of developing our beloved Sierra Leone falls on you too... Buy CDs, don't copy! Go to events being promoted by Sierra Leoneans and with Sierra Leonean performing artists. You too can make a difference.

May God bless the dealings of Supreme Inc as they continue to evolve.

The occassion was also graced by members of The Professionals, who were one of the leading comedy groups in Sierra Leone before most of the members moved to other parts of the world. ERMovement, Sierra Visions, Style Entertainment,
at the Veterans Soccer Club as they presented an Exclusive Soccer After-Party & Album Release ‘Tutu Pati’ on Sunday October 9th, 2005 @ Kili’s Kafe (Formerly 2K9), 2009 8th St. NW Washington DC

Friends and fans chilled out with Sierra Leone’s “Supreme” artists:
including; Emmerson, V, & Khady Black. They signed autographs on personalized pictures and CDs. A lucky few got their own signed t-shirts and some other goodies. Money was raised for Emmerson's Youth Foundation.

Next stop was Ohio with DJ Yusuf and the 'Ohio Crew'.

Saturday October 15th, Ohio

Promoted by DJ Yusuf, this show was intimate. The concert was smaller than most but that made for an energetic show. The packed audience had a chance to get up close and personal with the artists and a few shirts were ripped off a few sweating bodies. The crowd was well entertained and a good time was had by all. I'm sure we all came away from Ohio with very fond memories and we look forward to going back soon!

Boston, here we come!

Great reception and hospitality. Packed house enjoyed a great performance. The girls got flowers! We think they were blown away.

the only cancellation

Friday October 28th, San Jose, California

CANCELLED on 24th October 2005

Chuku did a great job!!!

Chuku wanted to do a show badly. We had no dates to spare. As soon as he found out about the cancellation in San Jose, California, he jumped in. We tried hard to make him see sense, but he wasn't having any of it. And like the master promoter that he is, he pulled off a great show. Not only did we have a LIVE band, we also played in a great venue for sound. Production was brilliant and we can't wait to go back. Also, we made some good friends and great business partners including the greatest web designer on the planet.

Later that same night...

The Sierra Delta Soccer Association
show was setback by technical problems at the start. Dodgy connections created sub standard sound but it was sorted out in time for the main events, which were Emmerson, Vee and Khady Black. This show has to be redone and with the experience gained, look of Washington DC. We'll be back!

It happened during the 'Salone weekend On' which affected the crowd. Other than that, you could tell these guys are professionals because the production was superb and we had a great show! For the first time in a long time we saw Sierra Leoneans fighting over the Salone flag. Nice! Many more took pictures and bought CDs which the artist signed after the show.

emmerson in los angeles - LA in California - on November 11th 2005.

The LA show was amongst the best. Great production, great crowd and great performances, especially from V. Kao Denero was also in attendance and his brand of Afro Hip was just right for the LA crowd. We met David from UJIMA and Khady Black worked with him when he launched the UJIMA NGO in Sierra Leone. We hope to see him again sometime in the summer as he launches in the USA. We rocked Hollywood.

The whole crew was treated to the Refugee All Stars' world premier screening of their documentary 'The Refugee All Stars' in Hollywood, California on Wednesday, 9th November 2005. They have now gone on to become the most successful band in Sierra Leone's history. Even bigger than Emmerson of Borbor Bele fame.

The show in Atlanta promised to be the best! It wasn't, but it was pretty damn good and a great way to end the official tour of 2005. We had a live band performance again and the sound was pretty good. Well organised. Can't wait to go back to ATL!

Who made it back to Sierra Leone?

Everybody made it safely back to Sierra Leone in time for Supreme Inc Artistes to win the most awards at the Celtel Premier Music Awards 2005. Five awards in total from eight nominations - considering Supreme had double nominations in both the Best Female Vocalist and Best Reggae Song categories - which meant we could win a total of six awards out of our eight nominations. Five out of six was a great day's work! Well, it was actually six awards, but there are no nominations for the BEST SELLING ALBUM which was bagged by Emmerson for sales of Borbor Bele. Emmerson released his second album called Two Foot Arata in January 2007.

Supreme Events - no one does it better

HRH The Prince of Wales' visit to Sierra Leone: November 2006: In collaboration with the British High Commission Sierra Leone, The British Council Sierra Leone, IMATT and other security personnel AND the management of the Freetown Golf Club, Supreme Events actively participated in the planning and management of the Cultural Celebrations organised for His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales' visit on November 27th 2006 at the Freetown Golf Club in Freetown. Supreme Events supplied the Public Address (PA) System for the ROYAL event. Supreme Music Artistes were the sole performers of contemporary popular music at the event. Lawrence Spencer-Coker - President of Supreme Inc - had the personal honour and distinction of MCing the royal occassion. Tom Walsh, Director of British Council Sierra Leone and Cultural Attache to the British High Commission had this to say about LSC and his team:

" Your help and that of your team was simply invaluable! Without it we simply would not have been able to put on such an impressive and very much appreciated display of the rich music, drama, cultural and educational life of Sierra Leone. I know that Prince Charles really enjoyed the whole event and I very much want to thank you for all your personal support in making it such a clear success..."

SIERRA LEONE BREWERY CLIMAX & ROYAL CLUB JINGLE COMPETITION: The leading brewer and distributor of beer in Sierra Leone used the jingle competition to launch two new brands into the Sierra Leonean market. Climax, an energy drink and Royal Club, a shandy drink. Popular Sierra Leonean artists were commissioned to produce two jingles each - one for each product - in a winner takes all competition. Lawrence Spencer-Coker was Chief Judge and he was instrumental in formulating the judging criteria. Contestants were judged on, Message Delivery, Musical Beat, Stage Presentation and Jingle Duration. Supreme Events conceptualised the branding and branded the venue, which was Paddy's International Bar & Restaurant in Aberdeen.

Supreme produced a video documentary of the event. The Climax competition was won by the KallBoxx Family and the Linx Family won the Shandy competition.

Swank Couture Fashion Spectacular 2006 proudly sponsored by the Freetown Cold Storage: Swank Couture is the leading Fashion House in Sierra Leone. The Swank Fashion Spectacular, an annual event, raises funds for The City of Rest and Drugs Rehabilitation Centre - which is the only centre of its kind providing a home and rehab centre for Sierra Leonean drug addicts of all ages from any part of the world. The 2006 fundraiser happened at the Aqua Sports and Boating Club in Freetown. Supreme Events handled promotions, provided the PA System, lighting and some back stage management.

The unique husband and wife team of Lawrence and Nicky Spencer-Coker were the event MCs. We initiated an impromptu auction and raised TWO MILLION LEONES for the City of Rest.

Nokia 2006 End of Year Cash Bonanza Promotion: To celebrate the start of a brand new year, Nokia organised a raffle draw promotion in Sierra Leone. In the promotion, three Nokia phones - the Nokia 1110i, the Nokia 1600 and the Nokia 2300 - were promoted. The idea was, buy any one of the 3 phones mentioned from any authorised Nokia dealer in Sierra Leone and automatically enter a raffle competition to win up to FIFTY MILLION LEONES - about TEN THOUSAND BRITISH POUNDS. Consolation prizes included TWENTY FIVE MILLION LEONES and TEN MILLION LEONES. Supreme Events organised the branding of the venue and the guest list. We also supplied the PA System and the entertainment for the Star Prize draw event in Sierra Leone, which included, Snow-V, SKYY, and Slash G who serenaded the STAR PRIZE Winner with his hit religious song, Winner. Present at the event, representing Nokia HQ were: the West Africa Area Manager for Nokia - Yannick Dabaupte; and the Channel Manager - Arthur Moloko. Both thought the event was "just perfect". Yannick, in his short address to the audience said that Nokia are planning to maintain a huge presence in Sierra Leone and will soon start offering the global guarantees on their products, so if there are any problems they can be fixed free of charge by Nokia specialists in Sierra Leone during the guarantee period. Nokia's presence in Sierra Leone has been truly enhanced as a result of this promotion.

We have also been a part of some other great events. We took part in the Chancellor's Banquet on the 16th February 2007 - Kimbima Hotel - to celebrate 180 years of the Fourah Bay College. The President of Supreme Inc, Lawrence Omolare Spencer-Coker was Master of Ceremonies, as he was with his wife, Nicky, at the Pink Charity Ball, the Independent Media Commission (IMC) Media Awards, the All Works of Life (AWOL) Awards, the Celtel Premier Music Awards, and other corporate events of distinction happening in Sierra Leone.

CORPORATE PLANS/PROJECTS/EVENTS + SIMPLY SUPREME SOLUTIONS™ = PROFIT

PROFIT

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY PROFIT?

Profit to us means success. Achieving or exceeding the goals and targets set for each and every activity. Profit, to the British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone in November 2006 when Prince Charles made his first visit to Sierra Leone under her watch, was the safe arrival and departure of HRH The Prince of Wales. Plus a packed house at the cultural celebrations. Profit for her was not FINANCIAL gain. Supreme Events were a BIG part in delivering her PROFIT. On the other hand, when a musician organises a concert, PROFIT comes in the form of a packed house and cash in the bank. Our Simply Supreme Solutions™ helped deliver PROFIT. The Record Books speak for themselves!

USING THE BIG APPROACH

You can ensure SUCCESS everytime

Using The BIG Approach, each ACTIVITY or PROJECT taken head on is thoroughly assessed as follows:

  1. Will the proposed activity PROTECT & ENHANCE the BRAND OF our CLIENT?

  2. Will Government and the Public feel POSITIVELY or NEGATIVELY about the proposed activity? We believe that law abiding citizenship extends to corporate citizens. Negative influence over Government and Public hinders the progress of corporate plans.

  3. Will our CLIENT experience GROWTH as a result of the proposed activity or event? Will the client increase their client base or will sales increase or will the client end up better placed to handle a similar issue in future?

These are just some of the GROWTH questions considered.
The BIG Approach is a complete SYSTEM for EFFECTIVE PROJECT ANALYSIS, PLANNING & MANAGEMENT.

Using The BIG Approach; Project Management and Event Planning and Management is GUARANTEED to produce BETTER RESULTS.

GUARANTEED to produce PROFIT. Because The BIG Approach was devised by us, Supreme Profit Strategists and Consultants use the system to ensure that each project or event is benchmarked and effectively analysed and controlled from conception to implementation, which ultimately means SUCCESS & PROFIT for our CLIENTS.
