In September 2005, Supreme Inc left the shores of Sierra Leone directly for London. We had just finished tours in Guinea and The Gambia. The party that left for London included, Emmerson and V - of Borbor Bele fame - and Khady Black - of Mr Government fame - and their manager, Lawrence Spencer-Coker, who is also the President of Supreme Inc. This was the first time a tour of this magnitude had been embarked on by Sierra Leonean artistes. No funding from outside sources, and no backing from outside sources. The burning question on everyone's lips were: Will they get their US visas? Will they make it to the US? Will the artists return back to Sierra Leone?
Read on to find what happened, the awards and who made it back and how Supreme Music changed the Sierra Leonean music scene forever. This is just a taste of things to come as Supreme Music continues to pioneer.
AT ZANZIBAR, EMMERSON, V AND KHADY BLACK IN CONCERT
WASHINGTON, D.C., OCTOBER 8, 2005 - Emmerson, Vlicious - the only female voice on the critically acclaimed Borbor Bele album, and Khady Black, the latest and the hottest of Sierra Leone’s musical artistes made their debut at the Zanzibar Club last night amidst clamourous applause and yearning. The Zanzibar, is located in the precincts of the plush waterfront of fine restaurants dotting the sea food market on Main Street abutting the lap of the Potomac River in South West Washington, D.C. The Zanzibar, is adjacent the opulent H2O club
The day preceding the concert was rainy. In the course of the night, the rain came down in sheets and forebode a wet concert evening. But Saturday evening was dry to the delight of the patrons and fans anticipated grey skies but a pleasant dry evening of Emmerson and Company. As the skies withheld the rain, there poured into the waterfront eager crowds of patrons and fans. Approaching the club from the summit of L’enfant Plaza, overlooking the swollen Potomac River bouyed by the heavy rains, a dim note of the warmup music of the concert could be heard.
A line bearing late patrons purchasing tickets closed the entrance. In the hallway were milling fans engaged in small talk and enjoying drinks. Inside the cavernous concert hall of the Zanzibar, a thousand patrons occupied the standing room enjoying the warmup performance featuring Salone Ismael and Victoria Fornah (Vicky) accompanied by a local band. Draped in Rasta colors, Salone Ishmael in his signature dread locks adorned the stage as Vick Fornah, clad in a white stage outfit regaled the audience with her songs. And when she sang the most popular of those songs, the audience joined her in chorus singing “dis wol”. Her performance was captivating. But the hour the patrons paid $30.00 for was reaching its summit when Khady Black was announced in concert.
Khady Black sprung on the stage to great audience excitement. She had it going on. She wore her hair in dread locks festooned with seemed like silver ringlets. The petite and elegant rising reggae artist performed crowd favorites from her debut album: “Cosmetic Girls,” “Repatriation,,” “Some Love.”Corruption,” and capped her performance with her hit songs, “Mr. Government” and "Faire". With “Mr. Government,” Khady Black stirred the souls of her compatriots of her postwar country, asking her rulers for medicine, food, shelter among the elusive necessities often within reach, only to the opulent class. Prancing on the stage in feline agility, she was in her elements in classic Rasta fashion as the audience cheered her. Khady Black indeed won her place among talented singers and performers in the firmament of rising musical artists.
The Zanzibar debut of Emmerson, Vee and Khady Black was approaching the climax when Emmerson was announced on his way to the stage. The well of the hall swelled in anticipation. Young women and fans of Emmerson, drew near as he climbed the stage amidst clamorous applause and huzzas. Emmerson, slight of frame, coffee black, with small piercing eyes, a graceful smile, his charming countenance, started to perform “Sugar meresin,” and the crowd beckoned. He performed “gi am bench,” and the crowd’s mood swung and yearned for more. Then junkie boy,” and he endeared them..
It was when Emmerson performed and sang “Elizabeth” with his boon consort, Velma Richards, that a clamourous bevvy of patrons swooned over him. The male patrons drooped over Velma as she charmed them with gyrations in tight fitting jeans. The heaving, sometimes sonorous voice of Emmerson in harmony with Vee’s sultry and enchanting voice, her bewitching performance as the wicked ‘Elizabeth,’ her well-turned feet in dance performance, graced the stage. The pair of artists performed the popular song, “Elizabeth,” in a heart-breaking lament of unrequited love in which Emmerson agonizes over a lover who spurn him after he forsook a former lover who bought him a Benz. She in turn proclaims her fashion of cupboard love and despairs of empty pocket men. Emmerson and Vee were at their best in the bewail of this pooch pooch romance.
The best of the concert was yet to come with the performance of “Uman lapa,” when Emmerson and Vee conjoined in a wonderful medley giving vent to Vee’s sensuous voice, her winsome stage gestures. Vee’s cooing and Emmerson’s lustful entreating, were command performances. The boon pair gave an encore in “Tutu pati,” the most popular of the Emmerson songs. Yearning fans pined for him as he threw off his loose black shirt and remained clad in a white singlet. His lanky frame bounced to the delight of the fans as they yearned to touch him. He dared them when he stepped down into the well of the concert hall and the fans swarmed the star. The club bouncer rescued Emmerson and returned him to safely onto the stage.
Then, it was on to the performance of “Swegbeh,” and Borbor Bele which too drew applause and pleasant appreciation of the pair’s outstanding performance. Emmerson, a recent graduate of Njala University with the National Diploma in Computer Technology and Velma Richards, a First-Year Medical student at the College of Medicine and Allied Sciences in Sierra Leone, are uncommon talented artists with professional interests. The concert ended on a high note with audience satisfaction for wonderful performances. The artists autographed their albums and cards. They repaired backstage for a small award ceremony in which the writer Karamoh Kabba, President & CEO of the Sierra Leone Youth Lending Hands, a community based non-profit organization joined him in recognizing the artists. Emmerson received a Plaque and certificate for demonstrating outstanding musical talent and Velma Richards and Khadija Fofanah received Certificates of Distinction for the same.
If Khadija Fofanah, Emmerson and V gave an excellent concert performance, it is because they are fine artist to behold. If their stars are rising in the Sierra Leonean pantheon of music, it is because their compatriots and their fans appreciate good music laced with political commentary. With such an auspicious commanding debut performance in the United States, the news is spreading to other states that Emmerson, V and Khady Black will entertain more fans in the approaching days in a concert near you
Above all, if these young artists have wrought fine performances, Lawrence Spencer-Coker (Omolare), their Manager has done a great job with his ShowBiz company, Supreme Inc in Sierra Leone and is critical to making the tour happen. It was his foresight that has taken this show on the road to London and now to the USA. In distinguished performance as promoter is Mohamed Kosia, manager of Cool and Cozie Promotions in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Lawrence made him the exclusive US Promoter of the Supreme Inc Borbor Bele USA Tour. Together with encouraging assistance from good collaborators, the show will break out in other cities with similar successes.

The Last USA Show of 2005
The final chance to see Emmerson and Vee during the 2005 USA Tour was SUNDAY, 27TH NOVEMBER 2005. The show was a family daytime show specially for kids. It amazed us to find out that kids born and bred in America - and couldn't speak Krio, the main local language in Sierra Leone - could sing the words to Emmerson's songs, most of which are in Krio. This show was dedicated to the kids and we made sure they had a great time. Event details include:
TIME: 4PM TO 10PM
$10 FOR KIDS TICKETS
$15 ADULT TICKETS
VENUE: BEST WESTERN HOTEL (CAPITAL BELTWAY)
5910 PRINCESS GARDEN PARKWAY
LANHAM - MARYLAND - 20706
The show was promoted by C&C Promotions.
Now, back to the beginning...
Emmerson, V and Khady Black's first ever USA performance took place at Zanzibar on the Waterfront in Washington DC. The show was packed to the rafters and a trailer of the DVD can be seen
here. The show at Zanzibar also featured other Sierra Leonean artists including; Vicky Fornah, Salone Ishmael, who got really close to the screaming audience and JR the Sniper! who was an inspiration during the USA tour. Thanks JR! It all kicked off on...

A review of the Emmerson, Vee and Khady Black performance at Zanzibar
by Amadu Massally a.k.a. Jepson
If you don't know who Attilla is then you don't know about Sierra Leonean music. Attilla is one of the most talented musicians to have come out of ' Salone '. His keyboard skills are lengendary! He fronts the Afrika Kassa Band and they have a regular spot at both Zanzibar and Boukum Cafe, both in Washington DC. Attilla and Afrika Kassa opened the show and it was amazing. After Attilla's opening at Zanzibar, I had the opportunity to listen to Khady Black, Vee and Emmerson LIVE for the very first time and the show was captivating. Vee started by singing the national anthem. Anyone there would admit that she has the most amazing voice on the planet at the mo. Beyonce has absolutely nothing on her.
With the right management - which I am sure she has under SupremeInc - she and Khady the 'roots woman' will climb to even higher heights. After the intro, Khady Black kicked off the SupremeInc. show... and what a show it was. Vee joined her on stage and they did a few songs together. This is the first time Sierra Leonean artists have been taken all the way from Sierra Leone to do a UK/US tour taking in several states. We must commend Cool & Cozie Promotions in the US for promoting the show and also SupremeInc for making it happen. Anyway, back to the show.
Then came the big man himself, or should I say tall, slim and handsome man. Emmerson, entertained the crowd with his vibrant style and I liked the fact that he gave a short story to every song, so as to give a perspective with regards to his line of thinking as the songs were developed.
Overall it was well-attended in spite of the fact that it is the month of Ramadan, and so forth.
The man behind the vision, Mr. Lawrence Spencer-Coker - a guy I spoke to at length - has a plan which is speedily unfolding and we expect to take our Sierra Leonean musicians globally. There is enough raw talent out there that can be honed and promoted to the next level... And personally I believe they are on the right track with SupremebInc.
Sierra Leoneans showed a sense of nationalism, whether we realized it or not last night and with people like myself embracing the inspiration provided through the forum of music and lyrics and "preaching the gospel" we can make a difference.
So all who may have the opportunity to view this message remember the ONUS of developing our beloved Sierra Leone falls on you too... Buy CDs, don't copy! Go to events being promoted by Sierra Leoneans and with Sierra Leonean performing artists. You too can make a difference.
May God bless the dealings of Supreme Inc as they continue to evolve.

Saturday October 15th, OhioPromoted by DJ Yusuf, this show was intimate. The concert was smaller than most but that made for an energetic show. The packed audience had a chance to get up close and personal with the artists and a few shirts were ripped off a few sweating bodies. The crowd was well entertained and a good time was had by all. I'm sure we all came away from Ohio with very fond memories and we look forward to going back soon!

the only cancellation
Friday October 28th, San Jose, California
CANCELLED on 24th October 2005 Chuku did a great job!!!
Chuku wanted to do a show badly. We had no dates to spare. As soon as he found out about the cancellation in San Jose, California, he jumped in. We tried hard to make him see sense, but he wasn't having any of it. And like the master promoter that he is, he pulled off a great show. Not only did we have a LIVE band, we also played in a great venue for sound. Production was brilliant and we can't wait to go back. Also, we made some good friends and great business partners including the greatest web designer on the planet.

It happened during the 'Salone weekend On' which affected the crowd. Other than that, you could tell these guys are professionals because the production was superb and we had a great show! For the first time in a long time we saw Sierra Leoneans fighting over the Salone flag. Nice! Many more took pictures and bought CDs which the artist signed after the show.

The LA show was amongst the best. Great production, great crowd and great performances, especially from V. Kao Denero was also in attendance and his brand of Afro Hip was just right for the LA crowd. We met David from UJIMA and Khady Black worked with him when he launched the UJIMA NGO in Sierra Leone. We hope to see him again sometime in the summer as he launches in the USA. We rocked Hollywood.
The whole crew was treated to the Refugee All Stars' world premier screening of their documentary 'The Refugee All Stars' in Hollywood, California on Wednesday, 9th November 2005. They have now gone on to become the most successful band in Sierra Leone's history. Even bigger than Emmerson of Borbor Bele fame.

The show in Atlanta promised to be the best! It wasn't, but it was pretty damn good and a great way to end the official tour of 2005. We had a live band performance again and the sound was pretty good. Well organised. Can't wait to go back to ATL!
Who made it back to Sierra Leone?
Everybody made it safely back to Sierra Leone in time for Supreme Inc Artistes to win the most awards at the Celtel Premier Music Awards 2005. Five awards in total from eight nominations - considering Supreme had double nominations in both the Best Female Vocalist and Best Reggae Song categories - which meant we could win a total of six awards out of our eight nominations. Five out of six was a great day's work! Well, it was actually six awards, but there are no nominations for the BEST SELLING ALBUM which was bagged by Emmerson for sales of Borbor Bele. Emmerson released his second album called Two Foot Arata in January 2007.
